A Grand Tour of the volcanoes of Italy


Experience and enjoy a grand tour of the most famous and most active volcanoes in Europe.
A 13 day tour visiting two different major volcanological areas within the beautiful country of Italy.
Explore and experience Vesuvius and the picturesque Bay of Naples before heading off to the Aeolian Islands to enjoy stunning cobalt-blue sea and wild windswept mountains swathed in colourful flowers.


Day 1
Arrive and transfer to friendly hotel, where a welcome drink and discussion about the forthcoming schedule is planned. 

Day 2
A visit to Vesuvius to enjoy the views over Naples and the bay followed by a visit to the Roman town of Herculaneum buried by the well documented eruption of A.D.79.

Day 3
Today we will begin with a visit to Campi Flegrei, to the west of Naples, to witness unique examples of 'bradyseism'. In the afternoon we will visit nearby Solfatara to experience and examine the bubbling mud pools and steam vents found there.

Day 4
This morning we will visit the famous site of Pompeii which has been exceptionally well preserved following the volcanic eruption nearly two thousand years ago. The afternoon can be spent how you desire, perhaps soaking up the atmosphere of Naples city.

Day 5
This morning we will visit the National Archaeological museum in Naples city, which houses some of the best artefacts recovered from both Pompeii and Herculaneum. In the evening we will board the ferry for Stromboli and watch the lights of Naples fade into the distance.

Day 6
This morning as we arrive at Stromboli at early dawn and the next two days will be spent on this exciting island otherwise known as the 'Lighthouse of the Mediterranean'. In the late afternoon we will have a chance to observe and wonder at several active crater eruptions at very close range.

Day 7
Today further activities that can be enjoyed on Stromboli are optional additional trips to view the amazing active craters as well as optional boat trips around the island.

Day 8
Today we will take a hydrofoil journey to Vulcano and have an opportunity to explore and enjoy the bubbling volcanic mud pools and steam vents followed in the afternoon with climbing Fossa di Vulcano.

Day 9
The island of Lipari is our destination today where we will visit and observe the world famous obsidian flow and pumice deposits from Monte Pilato.

Day 10
Today we will continue our journey on to Sicily, having plenty of time to explore the area while not missing out on the bustling fish market and the adjoining food market.

Day 11 and 12
The next two days will be spent exploring and enjoying the delights of Mount Etna ascending to an altitude of 2500m and observing the variety of volcanic features the Mount Etna boasts. There will also be an opportunity to take an optional 4WD tour accompanied by state registered guide to view the recently active SE crater.

Day 13
Today offers a last minute chance to soak up the atmosphere and buy any last minute souvenirs before the tour concludes after lunch, at which point you will be offered (if required) transfers either back to the airport, train station or port.
