Emma Binfield
Emma has spent the last 16 years working in the travel and tourism industry. She started her career in tourism as a travel representative in Greece, Turkey, Tenerife and Lapland and then moved on to work in the airline industry - ultimately rising to the position of most senior member of crew on board the aircraft (responsible for other members of cabin crew and the safe and steady running of each daily duty).
In 1998 Emma embarked on a correspondence programme of university level learning which led to her undertaking a full time BSc degree program in Geography from University of Sussex, Brighton and an Masters degree in Geophysical Hazards from University College London. Throughout Emma's programmes of study she has continued to work as a member of cabin crew thus highlighting both her desire to learn as well as to continue working and travelling.
In her private life Emma travels extensively and most recently completed six weeks backpacking around Peru and Ecuador, culminating in her hiking the Macchu Piccu trail and spending 8 days sailing around the Galapagos Islands. In addition to spending six weeks spent travelling around both the North and South islands of New Zealand.
Dr Christopher Kilburn
Christopher Kilburn is a volcanologist in the Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre at University College London, U.K. He has more than 25 years of research experience on active volcanoes in Europe, the U.S.A., Africa and the Caribbean, and is currently Director of UCL's MSc course in Geophysical Hazards. His research has focused on applying new models to improving methods for responding to volcanic emergencies, notably techniques for forecasting eruptions and for anticipating the behaviour both of lava flows and of giant, catastrophic landslides.
This combination of Emma Binfield's experience in the travel market and educational history in addition to Dr Christopher Kilburn's expertise on Italy, volcanology and other geological areas make this a unique combination of expertise.
